Carnaval de Notting Hill del 29 al 30 de agosto

Fue en este coqueto barrio londinense donde Hugh Grant y Julia Roberts se conocieron y se enamoraron, pero muchos años antes Notting Hill ya era mundialmente conocido por sus singulares casitas, sus librerías y, especialmente, porque desde 1965 en sus calles se celebra el último fin de semana del mes de agosto una gran fiesta: el carnaval de Notting Hill.

La versión europea del Carnaval de Río de Janeiro, de marcado tinte caribeño, ya que fue precisamente la comunidad indígena la que empezó a mover sus hilos, tiene en su impresionante colorido, sus sorprendentes disfraces y, sobre todo, la música, los grandes protagonistas de estos dos días en los que se desarrolla el mayor festival al aire libre de toda Europa.

Junto a los desfiles de carrozas de atrevidas formas y colores, los ritmos de sonidos tan calientes como el calipso, la soca o el reggae no falta el aroma que sale de los cientos de puestos que se alinean en las calles de Notting Hill y que ofrecen desde pedirse una pinta de cerveza a degustar en el evento anual más emocionante de Londres los alimentos más tradicionales de aquellas cálidas tierras.


Starting its life as a local festival set up by the West Indian community of the Notting Hill area, it has now become a full-blooded Caribbean carnival, attracting millions of visitors from all over the globe. With many astonishing floats and the sounds of the traditional steel drum bands, scores of massive sound systems plus not forgetting the hundreds of stalls that line the streets of Notting Hill. The Notting Hill Carnival is arguably London's most exciting annual event.

The Notting Hill Carnival usually gets under way on the Saturday with the steel band competition. Sunday is Kids' Day, when the costume prizes are awarded. On Bank Holiday Monday, the main parade takes place. It generally begins on Great Western Road, then winds its way along Chepstow Road, on to Westbourne Grove, and then Ladbroke Grove. In the evening, the floats leave the streets in procession, and people carry continue partying at the many Notting Hill Carnival after parties.

The Notting Hill Carnival dates for 2010 are August 29th and 30th.
